Adaptability of Genetically Engineered Bt Cotton Varieties in Different Growing Regions of Ethiopia

چکیده
Cotton varieties that are high yielding and resistant to pests required improve production productivity capitalize on the crop’s enormous potential its critical role in Ethiopia’s expanding textile industry. Lack of improved cotton technology has forced farmers recycle local for ages which have become very susceptible major causes low quality country. Among pests, bollworms (Helicoverpa armigera Pectinophora gossypiella) account 36–60% yield losses. In absence genetically or tolerant varieties, engineered bollworm-resistant Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) offered a great opportunity reduce crop losses from bollworms. The objective study was evaluate efficacy bollworm resistance adaptability Bt across growing environments Ethiopia provide recommendations. Two hybrids (JKCH 1947 JKCH 1050), one OPV (Sudan), three conventional (Weyito 07, Stam-59A, Deltapine-90) were evaluated at seven different agro-ecologies using randomized complete block design (RCBD) with replications. Results showed significant differences among genotypes other traits. Hybrids 1050 top yielders under mild infestations, mean seed 3.10 t·ha−1 each lint 1.20 1.19 t·ha−1, respectively, whereas standard check Deltapine-90 (popular variety) recorded 2.3 0.8 respectively. Combined analysis genotypes, environment, × environment interactions had highly effect ( P < 0.05) fiber quality. Weyito 07 two 1050) upper half lengths range 27.78 32.11 mm. For strength, 1050, 33.50 g/tex, 28.59 28.00 27.75 values within acceptable limits, staple ranging 28.44 mm strengths g/tex. show adaptation their superior performance due also added protection damage by contrast is bigger insect pressure conditions trait compared varieties. effective field against most locations shows wider use these can enhance Ethiopia.

Cotton varieties expressing Cry proteins derived from the soil bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) are grown worldwide for the management of pest Lepidoptera. To prevent non-target pest outbreaks and to retain the biological control function provided by predators and parasitoids, the potential risk that Bt crops may pose to non-target arthropods is addressed prior to their commercialization. ...
